Welcome to the Institute for Software Integrated Systems, a research organization of the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University. ISIS conducts basic and applied research in the area of systems and information science and engineering. Applications of ISIS technology span a wide range of software-intensive systems from small embedded devices, through real-time distributed systems, to globally deployed complex systems. Software is increasingly essential to the functions of these systems, and it is also the primary means of adapting them to their environments and users. Our research interests lie in the theoretical foundations, modeling, design, engineering, and educational aspects of these systems.  


$100 million ‘Destination Vanderbilt’ initiative launched to recruit top faculty, address essential challenges

Vanderbilt University launched Destination Vanderbilt, a $100 million university excellence initiative to recruit new faculty. Over the next two to four years, the university will leverage the investment to recruit approximately 60 faculty who are leaders and rising stars in their fields. The approximately 60 new faculty hires will represent an increase of approximately 50 percent above the usual hiring rate over the past three years. The new hires will be in addition to existing faculty hiring plans for each Vanderbilt school and college.



$8.7 million DARPA grant advances AI-assisted CPS design work

A new, $8.7 million project—Design. R–AI-assisted CPS Design—involves pathbreaking work for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency as future cyber-physical systems will rely less on human control and more machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence processors.

Smart grid, driver-assist and autonomous automobile systems, health and biomedical monitoring, smart cities, robotics systems, and new agricultural technologies are just a few CPS that interact with users in a lot of ways that change with context.



Vanderbilt Leads NSF-funded Project to Study Implications of New Biothreat Monitoring Technologies Developed by Microsoft

Vanderbilt engineers are leading the academic component of a massive Microsoft project that combines robotics, genomics, big data collection—and mosquitos—to monitor the environment and detect potential pandemics and other threats before they cause widespread outbreaks.

Microsoft recently announced expansion of its PREMONITION program and a large-scale pilot test in the Houston area. The Vanderbilt Institute for Software Integrated Systems, which has been working with Microsoft since the program began five years ago, is the lead institution on a related National Science Foundation Convergence Accelerator grant.



Dubey Receives $3.9M in Grants for Smart Transit

A $2.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation and a $1.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy will provide funding for Vanderbilt researcher Abhishek Dubey, assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, to reimagine regional transit systems using cutting-edge data science techniques through a group of projects called Smart Transit.



Xenofon Koutsoukos Appointed as Vanderbilt EECS Chair

Xenofon Koutsoukos has been appointed chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Koutsoukos is a professor of computer science, computer engineering and electrical engineering, and a senior research scientist with the Institute for Software Integrated Systems at Vanderbilt. He replaces Daniel Fleetwood, Olin H. Landreth Professor of Engineering, who served as chair of the department for 17 years.
